I want to use PRTG in an industrial environment. This requires OPC communication so the sensor alarms can be linked to the normal SCADA/HMI alarms. Is it possible to set this up?

The article applies as of PRTG 23

Monitoring OT environments

PRTG comes with various sensors that can help you monitor your OT environment, for example, the Modbus RTU Custom sensor or the OPC UA Custom sensor. As of PRTG 21.4.73, you can also configure OPC UA notifications to forward PRTG alerts to any system with an OPC UA server, for example, a SCADA system.

With PRTG 20.4.63.1427, we introduced the new OPC UA Server Status Sensor. For more information, see the Paessler blog: Introducing the new OPC UA sensors for monitoring industrial devices.

To take your OT monitoring one step further, use the Paessler PRTG OPC UA Server. With the OPC UA Server, you can consolidate your IT and OT views. PRTG OPC UA Server lets you connect any OPC UA client to PRTG OPC UA Server, for example, SCADA systems, DCSs, DCIM systems, BMSs, MESs, HMIs, or PLCs.

Alternatives

Others have also had success with the following alternatives:

  • Installing an SNMP agent on the device and monitoring with SNMP sensors.
  • Machineshop.io, an alliance partner with Paessler
