automated clearing of acknowledged alerts

Is there any way to stop the acknowledgement of a down sensor being cleared by sensors going into the grey state? For example, say there is a device with a low disk space alert and this has been acknowleged. If for some reason the device becomes unreachable and then comes back on line the acknowledgement is lost. This is particularly frustrating where you are monitoring a few device across a VPN from a central probe when loosing the vpn resets all the acknowledgements.

I'm afraid this can't be avoided if the sensors go into a grey/unknown state.
