Hi all,

Currently I have a setup of two servers dual core Xeon to monitor around 2000 sensors, like this:

500 Sensors with 30 seconds intervals in Probe 1
1500 Sensors with 1-2 minute intervals in Probe 2.

We are moving to a Virtualized environment, so, the PRTG servers are going to be moved to VMs (VMWare). So mi questions are:

- Is there any recomendations or "good practices" when installing PRTG in a VM? (I've been checking the archives of the KB without any luck).
- And, related to performace, is better to mantain the 2 Probe configuration even on a VM environment, or could/should move to a single Probe config with more hardware resources assigned?

Hello,

generally there no special precautions necessary if you move PRTG to virtual machines, however, When monitoring more than 1,000 sensors we recommend to use dedicated real hardware instead of a virtual machine. In our experience, this can improve performance a lot. What is important though to "watch for" in virtual environments is that the virtual machines all synchronize the time all with the same time-server. Otherwise a slightly "jumpy" time can cause problems on the probe-core connection.

best regards.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. What about replacing two proves with one with more resources? That question is regarding both, with physical hardware or VMs.

Thanks,

John.

You can surely merge these two probes, but in fact I would recommend to consider using a physical machine to host it, especially if you plan to expand this number of sensors.
