If there is a firewall between the core server and the device I want to monitor do I have to install a remote probe on my computer? Is the remote probe a requirement to monitor devices separated by a firewall?

You can consider a PRTG Probe as an agent, which does the actual monitoring. This is an application/process running on a Windows based PC. Each installation of PRTG has at least one probe, the local probe which runs along with the PRTG Server. As said the probe collects all monitoring results, and passes them on to the server for handling, storage, alarming, etc.. If PRTG can monitor the target "through" the firewall from the Local Probe, then you might not need a remote probe.
