Could you please explain how I change the default settings on the PING sensor and also how to make the PING sensor ping an address other than the IP of its parent?

Many thanks

Hello,

I'm afraid it's not possible to change 'default'-settings of sensors, you can only edit such settings after a sensor is created. It's also not possible for a Ping sensor to check anything else than the parent device.

Best Regards.

Hi

Thanks for the prompt answer.

There would seem to be an error in your manual at https://www.paessler.com/manuals/prtg8/ping_sensor.htm where it says "Note: If not set explicitly in a sensor's settings, it will connect to the IP address or DNS name defined in the settings of the parent device the sensor is created on."

Is there any chance of this being changed to allow this to work on a different IP as detailed in the manual. We are trialling PRTG but really need to ping several different ports of remote devices to see if the external and various internal addresses are all up.

Regards

Dear Trevor,

there are no changes planed to the Ping-Sensor in such a direction. In fact, there are just a few sensors which have the option to scan against a different IP/Hostname then the parent device (for example HTTP-Sensors for multi-homed webservers), and this will most likely not be changed.
The 'note' in the manual is more a 'general advice' for all sensors (you will see it on all sensor types) explaining the general behavior of sensors to scan against the parent device (except for those few exceptions).

Best Regards.
