One of our WMI Disk Free Sensors, has alerted us with a down event with the following message: "80041017: The query was not syntactically valid." a few times in the last few days. The sensor come back up normally and there is no disruption in log statistics however we aren't sure why this started happening out of the blue. Any ideas?

It seems that the DCOM/WMI-System on the target-host is not really stable, as this error-message "80041017: The query was not syntactically valid." comes directly from the target. It is directly forwarded by PRTG. Can you please try if the WMI Volume Sensor shows the same issues?

I had this on all sensors on 1 Workstation other than ping and rdp which were normal. I followed several of the suggestions here including the script to rebuild WBEM above which got all but CPU and Pagefile sensors working. Those 2 remained downwith the 80041017: The query was not syntactically valid error until running lodctr /r which I found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd348620(WS.10).aspx

Was also fixing the failure on out machine Win2008R2 - DomainController. The failure appeared after January Windows Updates installed.
