a question ive always wondered- when needing to reboot a server (server running prtg server + probe), what is the, i always first stop the probe and server core, via the prtg admin app. However, which is the recommenced order?

Should i stop the Core Server first, and then the probe? (or Probe first, and then core server?)

or does it matter?

Ive always stopped the core server first, and then the probe thinking this might keep the amount of data coverage to a minimum.

also, does the probe do any caching of data when it cant reach the core server? (ie can probe store like 5 minutes of data during a communication interruption with the server, which it will send to the server core once it can communicate again?)

thanks

Hello there,

In the end it doesn't really matter which one stops first. When the probe service stops first, no more sensor results will be reported to the core service and when the core stops first, the probe will try to cache sensor results until it connects again. However, this caching is obsolete as soon as the probe service gets stopped as well, because the cached data is only stored in RAM and when probe service stops, the cached data is gone as well.

When you run the installer of a newer version for example, it also simply sends a stop command to both services and waits until they have stopped before continuing, there is no order in which the services are being stopped.

Kind regards,

Erhard
