We have some Moxa Insutrial Switches which I monitor with the snmptrafficsensor. Usualy the Traffic on this Switches is very low, just some kbit's But once a day I have a peak of 2 billions (10^12) in under one minute

where could be the problem of this? Its just a problem of the Switch? or can this be a problem of prtg or snmp? thanks Tobias

  • Did you determine the incoming and outgoing interface on your switch?
  • Did you start monitoring the incoming/outgoing devices - their network cards?
  • Did you check what services or processes might cause this traffic on those devices?

From what you mention you talk about traffic in general - SNMP and PRTG just show you how much data flows - the reason is normally something else - that's actually exactly why you should engage PRTG and SNMP to monitor this.

Dear Tobias,

the value could be a result of a volume counter overflow. Please open the Setting tab of the device object in PRTG, open the SNMP Compatibility Options, and check how the overflow handling is configured.
