I would like a report that gives me an overview of the previous day's up/down events. I looked a little at report templates (even creating a new one), but wasn't able to achieve this. Ideally, it would just be data in a table-like presentation that showed times of day and what happened. For example:

02:35:02 - Buffalo 5548 - Ping down 02:42:37 - Buffalo 5548 - Ping up 10:13:06 - Chicago 2911 - Ping down 10:17:12 - Chicago 2911 - Ping up

... etc. Any thoughts how to make something like this?

By default this is not possible, but you can work around with a "Syslog Receiver Sensor". Please take a look at the following KB Post for more information.
