A little weird question regarding the "ping" sensor.

When you have a device with several sensor, is there any need for a ping sensor then? Wouldn't the lack of information from other sensors mean much the same?

Any good guidelines or reasons would be much appriciated.

Dear US,

using a ping sensor has several advantages.

- It could be, that the SNMP agent or another component fails, while the device is still running. Using a ping sensor allows to get more details about the device status.

- A ping sensor is light-weight. It can be used in quite short scanning intervals, like 30 seconds, with little impact on PRTG, or the network. So one gets a high-resolution availability report without spending a lot of resources.

- This also means that a ping sensor is good as the master object for dependence (automatic pauses of objects based on the up/down status of another object.)
