Is it possible to discover the devices in the network and add it on a map with the established connectivity through cdp protocol or SNMP.

If not how can I draw a live map where if a link goes down between two devices it will show down on the map.

I'm sorry, but PRTG cannot discover what is connected to a switch/router and then automatically draw a network map. We find that most all automatic-generated network maps differ so much from the "real network" or what one thinks of the structure of a network that one spends a lot of time re-arranging such an "auto-map".
But map ins PRTG, which have to be made manually, can of course show you the state of a connection between devices. You can either do that by placing stats-icon map-objects of certain sensors near a connection-line between devices on a map, or use the connection-line itself, which will change its color slightly, according to the 'worst' sensor-state on the attached device.

Hi there,

this article is a little old, but maybe some things have change ... When I think of the backbone switches it might be helpfull to see the status of each line/connection. How does PRTG determine which line has to change from green to e.g. red? Especially on devices with several links to other devices.

Hi,

By default, PRTG ignored disconnected states of the interfaces if your are using the SNMP Traffic Sensor. You can go into the settings of this type of sensor and for example enable Show alarm for all disconnected states. This way the sensor will turn red and you can for example add the device to a map to visualize the issue.
