We want to set up a new Server for our PRTG installation. But we don't know which OS will be the best, can you please advise me which OS ist better for the Core Server?

Hi,

PRTG is running well on both Windows Server 2008 R2 as well as Windows Server 2012 R2. We recommend using Windows Server 2012 R2 if you can because many sensor types show a significantly better performance on this OS.

Note: The operating systems Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are not officially supported anymore. If you run PRTG on one of these operating systems, you have to accept limited monitoring functionality. We do not provide support for any issues that might be caused (directly or indirectly) by using these Windows versions.

Best regards

Do you guys still think W2K3-R2 is a better base OS for PRTG ? I would prefer to use W2K8-R2 - am planning our deployment of 20k sensors (or thereabouts when we are finished). I hope to do most sensors over SNMP, but there will be some others in WMI etc as well

In terms of WMI Performance, Windows Server 2003 is still the fastest. However, considering its 'age' and future in terms of updates, nowadays 2008 R2 probably is the better choice (and it isn't that much slower with WMI monitoring).
