Dear support,

we currently have a PRTG installation with around 6000 active and 6000 inactive sensors. According to the web site, above 5000 sensors the only supported environment is a physical host.

Could you please confirm this is the case today? we have a very large virtualized environment and can provide the PRTG VM with as many dedicated resources as it requires.

We are not near 5 000 sensors yet, but we are running PRTG virtualized so this could be a issue for us too.

Our new Hyper-V platform are already running 75% of our servers.
None of our dedicated servers can give so much performance.

So to say that over 5 000 sensors should be ran on dedicated servers are a statement that misses serveral factors.

But if I am right the statement also states that Paessler do not offer support on performance issues and do not recommend virtualization on over 5 000 sensors, not that you do not have access to other support or that it's a bad idea if you are able to make the needed performance configurations yourself.

usually running PRTG in a virtual machine is fine, and does not cause troubles or problem. Most of the cases these are "small" installation though with sensor numbers up to 1000. It surely is not impossible to run larger setups in VMs, but with more sensors the hardware needs of PRTG rise of course.
We have then seen cases where systems with 5000 sensors (total sensor count on the PRTG Core Server) and more were running into running into performance issues on the PRTG Core Server (slow response times in the web interface, timeouts, etc.), and where PRTG ran significantly better after moving it to a dedicated physical machine.
So it's not impossible to run several thousand sensors in PRTG in a VM, if you know how to set your virtual environment to be very powerful, but our official support for performance & stability issues "ends" with 5000 sensors (for the Core Server in a VM).
Support for any other issues (on sensors, interface questions, etc.) is of course not limited by this.
