Hey guys,

Im doing an evaluation between PRTG and solar winds and I have a couple questions about SNMP and WMI

1) What is the best way for me to prepare a server for monitoring. Is there any SNMP installs from Microsoft that updates SNMP/WMI to latest versions.

2) Ive noticed a distinct difference between what SNMP pulls from a server and WMI pulls from a server. Since WMI is so heavy on the monitoring systems, is there a way to duplicate some of the WMI tests and make them SNMP tests by adding extra capability to the servers?

3) Would installing WinRM add capabilities to PRTG's monitoring?

Hello,

thank you very much for your KB-Post.

  1. ) For WMI you can try the basic suggestion (and links) in our general WMI Troubleshooting Guide. For SNMP, usually it's necessary to install / enable the SNMP Service on Windows, and also configure it.
  2. ) Most WMI Sensors have equivalents in SNMP, but it might be necessary to use third party tools like SNMP Informant to be able to access them.
  3. ) WinRM is only necessary for certain Windows Sensors, but normal WMI / Performance Counter Sensors do not benefit from it.

best regards.
