We have a primary and failover installation of PRTG. When we check the IIS logs of our server that is being monitored, it shows that both PRTG servers are sending pings to the server. Shouldn't the failover PRTG installation only be actively trying to communicate with the server if the primary PRTG server goes down? I can't find this in the settings, and would appreciate any help you can offer.

The way that the PRTG cluster node works is that the failover node will collect information from the same devices as the master node when the device is put into the cluster group. For all the sensors on the devices in the cluster group, both servers will collect their own data and when there is a failure on the master node, the failover will continue collecting data that way when the master comes back up, there is still a record of the monitoring information from when it was down.

There is no way to change this behavior in PRTG. You can read more about this in the article we have in the manual about clustering
