Hello. I have set up a FTP Server File Count sensor to check accessibility of FTP service. Now the server was not accessible for a few hours and the sensor started flooding my mailbox with notifications. Checking the sensors log I found following:

1/31/2013 10:14:49 AM	FTP Server File Count	Down	Timeout caused by wait for mutex (code: PE035)
1/31/2013 10:10:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Notification Info	State Trigger activated (Trigger ID: 4294970171)
1/31/2013 10:10:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Unknown	No data since 1/31/2013 9:59:49 AM
1/31/2013 10:01:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Notification Info	State Trigger activated (Trigger ID: 4294970171)
1/31/2013 9:59:49 AM	FTP Server File Count	Down	Timeout caused by wait for mutex (code: PE035)
1/31/2013 9:55:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Notification Info	State Trigger activated (Trigger ID: 4294970171)
1/31/2013 9:55:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Unknown	No data since 1/31/2013 9:44:49 AM
1/31/2013 9:46:00 AM	FTP Server File Count	Notification Info	State Trigger activated (Trigger ID: 4294970171)
1/31/2013 9:44:49 AM	FTP Server File Count	Down	Timeout caused by wait for mutex (code: PE035)

The sensor was switching between "Unknown No data since" and "Down Timeout PE015" status.

Is this behavior a bug in the sensors code or is this 'by design'? If it is 'by design' how may I avoid triggering many notifications?

Thanks a lot in advance for your reply thomas gottfried

Hello,

may I ask how many sensors you have of this type and with which scanning interval? If the interval is 60 seconds, please try 5 minutes.

best regards.

Once this sensor reports "Unknown"-State again the next time, please go to the "Setup"->"PRTG Status"->"System Status"-Page in PRTG and use the link "Write Probe state file". The state file(s) should be written into the "Logs (System)"-folder, please then send us the content of this folder. Please also forward us a screenshot of the overview page of one grey sensor, a screenshot of the Live graph and live data table of this sensor. And also a screenshot of the "Setup"->"System Status"-Page in PRTG.

You will find the log files within the data directory as defined under the "Core Server" tab of the "PRTG Server Administrator" tool, or in the following default paths:

XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor\Logs (System)
Vista/2008/Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Paessler\PRTG Network Monitor\Logs (System)

Please be aware that it might also be a 'V7' or a 'V8'-folder in which then the "Logs (System)"-folder resides. You can also use the option to upload the logs to our FTP-Server, using the button "Send Logs to Paessler..." on the tab "Logs" in the "PRTG Server Admin Tool". Or please send us the Logs and Screenshots via email to support@paessler.com
