I would like to know if it is possible to add a column to a custom map object that shows the device's comments.

So for a list of downed sensors, there would be a column that would display the comments for the device, of which the sensor is under.

It might look something like this...

columns="sensor,device,lastvalue,message,downtimesince,device_comments"

Regarding what you would like to achieve, I'm afraid that it's not possible to display the comments of the sensors' parent device when the content is set to "sensors". Indeed, the placeholder "%comments" will only return the information based on the objects you are reporting on.
