Would like to be able to monitor a Kafka environment without having to hack together the unsupported JMX probe or run a series of load intensive shell scripts.

I think this is a good reference but this might be a bigger lift by bringing in native JMX monitoring. Nagios and Zabbix seem to have it for Kafka.
