we're currently planning to setup a PRTG Server XL Instance with roughly 10.000 Sensors (Migrating from different solution), spanning over local and remote sites.

Our planned specs for the Core-Server currently:

Physical Server 16-Core CPU 128GB DDR4 3TB SSD Storage (Raid 1) 2x 1GB Uplink

We have a few questions regarding that:

1. CPU for Core-Server - More cores or higher frequency? (Also AMD or Intel?) 2. How is the load on remote probes compared to the core-server? 3. Can you install all remote probes as virtual servers or should they be physical as well? 4. Should the Storage be optimized for read-, write-heavy or mixed data-input?

Your planned specs should be more than enough. The total number of CPU Cores is more important than higher frequency. I'm afraid there's no official recommendation for the CPU frequency. However we experience more issues in general when the frequency is lower than 2 GHz. If you are using reasonably up-to-date CPUs you should be fine.

Remote Probes are just collecting data and the results will be send to the Core Server. The main performance load is on the Core Server. Remote Probes can be installed on virtual servers as well. However for the best performance we always recommend to use physical machines.

PRTG has it's own database which is used for read/write equally. Therefore you should go with mixed data-input.
