Hello!

We think to change some WMI sesnors to PerfCounter Custom, can you give some details of how PerfCounter working? Does this sesnor use WMI or some other technology? How PerfCounter interact with end device? Is this sesnor more lightwight then WMI?

Article Comments

Hi there,

all WMI based sensors actually also have the option to switch to Performance Counters instead of using WMI.

You can change this within the parent device's "Settings" tab, section "Windows Compatibility Options" > "Preferred Data Source".

This setting only takes effect in hybrid sensors that support both data sources.

Good, but if speak generally, PerfCounter will be more light for PRTG (for Windows in general)? If PerfCounter not use WMI, is use it own protocol to interact between the systems? Regarding to System Inpact PerfCounter Custom Sensor has a Green indicator, same time WMI has red.

Hi there,

yes, PerfCounter Sensors are lighter than WMI based sensors. However, this always depends on the specific sensor, that's why we added the "Performance indicator" to each sensor.

Another, even more lightweight alternative, would be using SNMP, as this has the least amount of overhead.

Please refer to the following links for an introduction to monitoring with SNMP, Windows prequesits and a SNMP troubleshooting guide:
