I have a HP DL360 Gen7 server running ESXi 5.5.0 iLo3 is on 192.168.1.1 I have PRTG installed on server with IP 192.168.1.100

I have setup an snmp trap receiver within PRTG pointing at the iLo3 address of 192.168.1.1, when i reboot that server i receive 5 trap messages as below:-

2 messages as:- Date Time = 25/01/2017 09:00:25 Source = 192.168.1.1 Agent = 192.168.1.1 Enterprise = SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.232 Bindings = RFC1213-MIB::sysName.0 = TRAP-TEST SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.232.11.2.11.1 = 0 GenTrap = 6 SpecTrap = 9017 Timeticks = 6566800 Version = 1

3 messages as:- Date Time = 25/01/2017 09:00:00 Source = 192.168.1.1 Agent = 192.168.1.1 Enterprise = SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.232 Bindings = RFC1213-MIB::sysName.0 = TRAP-TEST SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.232.11.2.11.1 = 0 GenTrap = 6 SpecTrap = 9001 Timeticks = 6566300 Version = 1

Have I set this up correctly, if so how do I get more trap messages and how do I decipher them?

Thank you very much for your KB-Post.

As long as you receive traps from your device the sensor is deployed correctly. If this sensors is deployed directly on the deivce you will receive traps from this distinct device only.

If you want to work with all traps which are sent to your Probe device, you need to deploy the sensor on the Probe device itself.

The amount of the received traps depends on the settings and activities on the monitored devices and are not related to the settings in PRTG.

Once the sensor is deployed and running fine, you can add several filter to this sensor.

I don't seem to be receiving any traps if I pull HDD out or power supply, can these vents be monitored with snmp traps?

Dear Filfish,

As already mentioned, the amount of the received traps depends on the settings and activities on the monitored devices. PRTG is a receiver of the traps only. The settings in PRTG have absolutely no influence on the amount or kind of traps.

If you want your device to send out traps for specific events, you need to configure this on the device itself.

Please check the documentation of the device or contact the vendor´s support for further information.
