I'm aware that we can leverage the Amazon CloudWatch EC2 (Beta) sensor for Basic Monitoring of hyper-visor data as well as CloudWatch Alarm monitoring.

How can we monitor in PRTG the system-level metrics when running the CloudWatch Agent on an EC2 instance?

So, this is what we can monitor with the PRTG CloudWatch EC2 sensor ...

And, this is what we'd like to monitor with PRTG ...

There is no custom alternative/version of the Cloudwatch sensor that allows you to query custom/additional metrics. The sensors are currently "as is".

But Cloudwatch has an API (which PRTG queries). Theoretically you could query this very same API with a custom-script and this will allow you to query/graph/alert upon any values implemented by Cloudwatch. But this will not be possible with the standard cloudwatch sensors.

Alternatively, you could also monitor the actual operating system on the EC2 instances for additional metrics (using SNMP or SSH for example)..

Thanks for the reply, appreciated. Yes, we are currently utilizing the many useful SNMP sensors. And for most purposes they capture what we need.

Mostly curious about capturing that data in PRTG "in case" we want/need any more detailed data.

I'll be looking into custom-script options and will post anything useful here. Thanks again.

Hi there, I know this is an old post. Did you find a solution using Cloudwatch API to monitor anything?

Hi there,

in PRTG we didn't change here anything. I would recommend our overview page here for AWS monitoring.
