On our Cisco ASR4331 routers, we would like to monitor the true bandwidth of the internet connection on the router interface. We have several circuits with various speeds ranging from T1, to 100Mbps. It looks like the PRTG is reading the interface speed thru the SNMP settings, however we are wondering if we can get a more accurate read from the hardware.

  1. we are wondering if using the Bandwidth command can be used to set the actual link speed?
  2. IF not under the edit channel under the interface Data-> display actual values in Mbit/s a second take into account the Maximum (Mbit/s) value or is it only taken into account if Display in percent of Maximum is checked?

Hi there,

The interface speed is only read once for the channel settings, more specifically for the "Display in percent of maximum"-option.

However the actual bandwidth is calculated via the counters which PRTG queries per interface by forming a Delta (New-Counter - Old-Counter = Bandwidth since last scan). So actually this is the real bandwidth reported by the device.

Best regards.
