I would like to have an informative overview about the status of my Citrix environment. In addition to the basic parameters like CPU, memory, etc., I want to gather other even more useful Citrix related statistics.

But first I need to know what to monitor regarding Citrix. Are there recommended counters, metrics, event IDs, services, ports that are essential to be monitored? Second, how can I achieve monitoring these Citrix parameters of XenApp, XenDesktop, XenServer, licensing services, Netscaler, etc.?

Monitoring Citrix Environments

Many Citrix environments lack of basic monitoring. Though, companies should proactively support their Citrix systems in order to avoid issues before they occur. But what exactly should be monitored and how can this be achieved?

You can obtain most values via Perfmon counters. With PRTG you are able to capture and to monitor them in a meaningful way. PRTG’s feature to create custom sensors in combination with PowerShell makes monitoring Citrix environments easy and comprehensible.

The Lockstep Technology Group provides a great guide on how to achieve Citrix monitoring. They point out what to monitor, as well as how it can be done with PRTG’s custom sensors.

In the first part of Lockstep’s monitoring Citrix series, they show the following custom PowerShell sensors:

  • Key XenApp Farm Performance Metrics
  • XenApp Server Performance Metrics
  • Citrix Licensing Stats
  • Citrix Web Interface Metrics
  • XenApp Load Metrics

Currently testing these sensors. Unfortunaly i'm getting an XML Error: he returned xml does not match the expected schema. (code: PE233). JSON: The returned json does not match the expected structure (Invalid JSON.). (code: PE231)

Any idea what could be causing this before i start making things worse? Not very familiar with XML :(
