How can I test website before authentication

I would like to test the site before authentication. For me it is only necessary the availability of the web site for authentication. When I inform web site address, the page for authentication is already displayed. I am using Http and Http advanced sensors. I get the sensor return connection refused. I do not have the credentials for test.

Would in this case a ping sensor (and/or a port sensor, testing port 80 or 8080) be sufficient?
