How does the IIS sensor gather its data?

I am trying to identify where a spike in IIS traffic reported by PRTG is coming from. I do not see any web log activity or application log activity during the time when PRTG reports a 1000x increase in activity. Where does this sensor gather its data on GET, POST, File Sent/Received, Not Found Errors, etc??

The IIS sensors gather their information via performance counters. You can open the perfmon on the target device and check the values manually.
