One server may have ten network interfaces with ten different IP addresses. The IP addresses may even be in several subnets, but PRTG will act strangely even if all are in one subnet.

When PRTG scans such a server, it doesn't find one device, it finds multiple devices.

Is there a way to make PRTG check the server's actual hostname and in case there's such a server in the list already, refrain from adding any sensors that are OS related like Windows uptime, wmi memory etc?

Hello there,

When you run an auto-discovery, PRTG scans for already known hosts and IP-addresses. So if a "new" device has the very same IP or the very same host entry, PRTG will skip this device.

However, if PRTG finds something new it creates a new device. To avoid that PRTG adds multiple devices (with different IPs) for the identical device, you need to make sure that all these IPs have the very same host entry in the DNS server.

To investigate this further, please forward us some screenshots of the settings of your auto-discovery.

Server that has multiple IPs will usually not have the same A record for all of them as it would be counterproductive. The simplest scenario may be a web server that has multiple ips and on each such ip, different service is provided. When monitoring the server, there's surely no need to have OS related sensors monitoring each such interface. And it should show it simply like one server with multiple interfaces.

That's just how PRTG works, one device per IP address. The only way around would be to manually add the device instead of running an auto-discovery.
