We had an odd occurrence recently where the "CPU Usage (Total)" was showing the same value as the "CPU Usage (per Instance)". So we were getting values over 200% in the total column. My understanding(and the normal behavior) is that value is normally divided by the number of cores in the system. Has anyone else seen this happen and have any idea why it does happen when it does?

we had reports of this issue recently, though could not find the cause with the users. May I please ask you to use Perfmon (perfmon.exe) in the Windows on the target machine where this happens, and add the Processor\% Processor Time , and please send a screenshot of this, when the issue happens.
Furthermore, please also use our WMI Tester as well, with the following query:

SELECT ThreadCount,HandleCount,PrivateBytes, WorkingSet,PercentProcessorTime, PageFaultsPerSec,Timestamp_Sys100NS,IDProcess FROM Win32_PerfRawData_PerfProc_Process WHERE Name ='<executablename>'

When the issue occurs, and send us this result as well (best all via email to support@paessler.com)

Hi,

we are experiencing similar problems:

Single CPU usage few 1000 %.

In addition to occasional high percentage, we also noticed that most of added sensor of this type show odd number of CPU-s, when there is more than one core/physical CPU present (1-3 or 1-5 for example).

The sensor is using performance counter method in all instances and not WMI.

asmpro,
it may be worth switching the parent device in PRTG to only read WMI. Then see if those false readings also happen with WMI. If they do, please consider enabling a spike filter to remove the false readings.
